Over the August bank holiday weekend flames from the capital cities of the UK’s nations will travel to Stoke Mandeville, home of the Paralympic Movement, and join together to create the Paralympic Flame. The flame will then be carried by teams of torchbearers through the night to the Paralympic Opening Ceremony, taking place on 29th August.
As a Local Leader, there is a variety of ways that you can show your support for the London 2012 Paralympic Torch Relay, so gather your friends and family, and get involved this summer.
Join a Flame Festival
To celebrate the lighting of national flames, Flame Festivals will be held in Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Bring your lanterns and lights to Belfast, Edinburgh and Cardiff to see your country’s share of the Paralympic Flame
Take part in a Flame Celebration
Celebrations are happening across the UK, with chances to join lantern processions or try Paralympic sports. Find a Paralympic Torch Relay event near you.
Make a Lantern Display
Send out a signal to the athletes by creating a good-luck display with your lanterns. From decorating your balcony with lights to designing glowing Agitos in the park, there are plenty of ways to take part. You could even create your own Light a Lantern event to put on our map. Why not use LOCOGS handy lantern making guide to help you create your very own lantern.
Burn the Midnight Oil
Light your lanterns and rally your family, friends and neighbours to line the overnight Paralympic Torch Relay route from Stoke Mandeville to London on 28 August. The street level route will be announced later this summer.
