Wednesday 29 August marks the start of the Paralympic Games. The excitement will build across the UK from Friday 24 August, in the run up to a 24-hour Paralympic Torch Relay that finishes at the Opening Ceremony. You can light a lantern and help lead the way to the Games.

On Wednesday 22 August, with just one week to go to the Games, four Flames will be lit at the summit of the highest peaks of the four UK nations. The Flames will then be transferred to each nation’s capital city where they will each become the focus for a day of Paralympic celebrations.

On Tuesday 28 August the Flames will be united in Stoke Mandeville – the spiritual home of the Paralympic Movement – to create the London 2012 Paralympic Flame. At 8pm that evening, the Paralympic Flame will embark on its 24-hour Relay, with 116 teams of five Torchbearers set to carry the Flame on its journey to the Olympic Stadium in Stratford.

The 24-hour Paralympic Torch Relay will travel through the night to arrive in London on Wednesday 29 August. Rally your family, friends and neighbours to see the Paralympic Flame and cheer on the teams of inspirational Torchbearers. Check the route to see when the Flame is coming near you

Feeling sad about the end of the Games? Read through our list of what made the Games great to reminisce about just how incredible London 2012 really was

A Torch Relay which touched and inspired the whole country, with more than 14.6 million people seeing the Olympic Flame on its journey across every nation and region of the UK, passing within easy reach of 95% of the population. Watch the highlights here

Team GB’s most successful Games in more than a century, finishing third in the medal table and exceeding the target of winning more medals in more sports than in Beijing, breaking four World Records in the process. Relive Team GB gold medal moments on the BBC

Some of the most iconic moments in Olympic history, these will be the events that we look back at in sporting montages for years to come whether it was Usain Bolt claiming his legendary status, Micheal Phelps as the most decorated Olympian ever or just the incredible performances by Team GB. See some of them here.

Record numbers of spectators at Olympic venues, with over 7.4 million people visiting venues across the UK. Over 2.4 million alone visited the Olympic park in Stratford. Outside the Olympic venues, more than four million people saw the Games at the Live Sites, over one million lined the streets for the men’s and women’s road cycling and 12 million people attended London 2012 Festival events.

Record numbers of TV viewers. With a global potential reach of 4.8bn, up to 1 billion people worldwide watched the opening ceremony alone, with an average UK audience of 22.4 million. The International Olympic Committee said that almost nine out of 10 people in the UK have watched some coverage of the London 2012 Games.

Breaking new ground for sporting equality, with London 2012 being the first Olympic Games where every single country had female athletes competing. Meanwhile, women’s boxing became an Olympic sport for the first time and more than 80,000 spectators watched the women’s football final at Wembley, a record breaking crowd for a women’s fixture.

The BBC sums up just how fantastic it was in their blog piece. Make sure you check out our ‘Remember the Games‘ section to find out how you can share your moments.

On 18/19th August, Join In Local Sport will encourage the nation to head down to where it starts for every great champion – their local sports club.

The aim of Join In is for every sports club or community group in the UK to put on a special event or activity on the Join In Weekend – capturing the enthusiasm for sport that we know this summer’s sporting events will generate.

Whether clubs want to sign up more members, supporters or volunteers, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attract local people who may never have come to their club before. And Join In will help them to do it.

Watch Eddie Izzard explain why you should get on your marks

Here are just a few reasons why you should get involved and Join In:

Meet people – Join In is happening in your local community – come along and make new friends.

It’s free – Most Join In events are open to everybody and completely free.

It’s easy – You don’t need to be an expert. Lots of Join In events are beginner-friendly or for people trying something new.

Be part of a special summer – Inspired by the Games? Join In is a great way to get involved in sport this summer.

Help to create a champion – It takes thousands of volunteers, coaches and mentors to help train a top sporting champion. By volunteering, you could help the next generation of sports stars.

Get fit – If you haven’t played sport for a while, taking part in Join In could kickstart a new fitness goal.

Bring friends and family – Join In is for everyone, whether you come on your own, bring friends or the whole family.

Just head to https://www.joininuk.org/locations to find an event in your area

On 27 July, switch on the Opening Ceremony and crowd round the TV for the start of London 2012. Get in on the action by throwing an Opening Night In party. Send out the invites, put up the bunting, wear your glad rags and get cooking. It’s showtime!

You could:

Ring bells

Start the celebrations early by hosting an All The Bells event and join thousands of others ringing bells at 8.12am as part of the London 2012 Festival.

Decorate and celebrate

Get everyone involved – there’s plenty to make for all ages. Attempt 100 metres of paper chains or theme your party food. Blow up balloons and make them look like Olympic Rings.

Get cooking

It’s time to put your apron on and get cooking with recipes to feed a family or a sports team. Try Pendleton pizza for a tasty snack, or cheese-straw oars for perfect finger food. And finish off with ‘dive right in’ punch – delicious.

Wear your glad rags

Face paint an eye on your forehead and wear blue or orange to mimic our mascots. Come in the colour of an Olympic Ring. Or you could go for the ancient Olympic Games look and make a toga.

Games for the Games

A party’s not complete without games. Get into teams and play bingo, or race Wenlock down your living room.

Sign up to receive the Local Leader newsletter to get access to exclusive competitions and celebration ideas. Then TellTom@london2012.com how you’re going to celebrate and he’ll send you a limited edition Local Leader pin badge.
